Can you believe that I didn’t meet any Painted ladies last year? Previous summers they had often been coming in our garden to feed on the buddleja. I had hoped to have them this year as well, but it didn’t happen. So last week I decided to search for them in a place where I was sure to find some. And my wish came true, I met a few ‘devil’s butterflies’ as the Bulgarian name suggests (Дяволска пеперуда – Dyavolska peperuda). I believe the one on the photo is a male, judging by the impressive androconia on its wings. (Please, correct me, if I’m wrong.) August 18. Uzana, Gabrovo, Bulgaria.
